About The Book:
Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. Me and my family are twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.
Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that.
The entire book is around how two strangers, Natasha and Daniel, fall in love with each other in just one day.
Book Review:
The book is innocent, fast-paced, heart-warming, and original. And with some amount of cliche. You get to read and learn a lot about Jamaican and Korean food and culture. And also a thing or two about science.. the universe.. and what it is made of.
Nicola Yoon’s writing style is very simple and concise which makes this book a very light-hearted easy read. You don’t have to stress your brain to understand what is happening. The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon is a relaxing read.
Each chapter is very short about 2 to 3 pages long and offers both – Natasha and Daniel’s point of view. Not just them, there are a couple of chapters from the side/supporting character’s point of views too which think is very thoughtful. It also sets the book apart from the rest of the books in this genre.
Would I recommend this Book?
Yes! I am not much of a romantics fan (given most of them have very predictable plots) but I enjoy reading this innocent teen/coming-of-age love story.
Even though few clichés are hard to digest, but then they are cliché for that very reason. I think I can overlook it this once. Few readers who disliked this book is mostly for the reason that they don’t belive in ‘love-at-first-site’ or the feeling of ‘there is something about us’ even before you talk to another person. Well, as for me, I do belive in that. It is not just a poetic thing to say but something like that really happens.
“There’s a Japanese phrase that I like: koi no yokan. It doesn’t mean love at first sight. It’s closer to love at second sight. It’s the feeling when you meet someone that you’re going to fall in love with them. Maybe you don’t love them right away, but it’s inevitable that you will.” ― Nicola Yoon, The Sun Is Also a Star
“We are capable of big lives. A big history. Why settle? Why choose the practical thing, the mundane thing? We are born to dream and make the things we dream about.” ― Nicola Yoon, The Sun Is Also a Star
“People just want to believe. Otherwise they would have to admit that life is just a random series of good and bad things that happen until one day you die.” ― Nicola Yoon, The Sun is Also a Star
“It’s better to see life as it is, not as you wish it to be. Things don’t happen for a reason. They just happen.” ― Nicola Yoon, The Sun Is Also a Star
“But he’s no planet, just the final fading light of an already dead star.” ― Nicola Yoon, The Sun Is Also a Star
