About The Book

The book is not that funny that you would actually laugh out loud. Smirks? Sure. But it is humorous at times and definitely a page turner.
Oyinkan Braithwaite surely will have your attention and won’t let you put the book down unread. A very very gripping read. Also, the short chapters will help you read it fast. But the book was neither disturbing, nor that thriller. It is a gripping story about family dynamics and sisterhood.
This book missed to make a mark on me. It was very anticlimactic with many loopholes and misses which could and should have been looked upon. Few things which I find weirdly missing is how the topic of why Ayoola killed or kept murdering was not covered properly? It would have been so much more interesting if pondered on.
Also, there was no character development. I did not feel any kind of attachment for any one. Especially Ayoola, an interesting one. You cannot really read into her. What kind of person is she? Is she really innocent (a question which pops in your head despite knowing very strongly that she isn’t). What is she upto? What is going on in her head? She is a character you really can’t decode.
Nigerian culture subtly surfaces in the narrative. Elements like the intricate carvings on the sister’s father’s wooden cane were highlighted.
Would I recommend this Book?
It was a decent and a quick read. Once can easily finish it within 3-4 days. Might be a good pick to come out of reading-slump. Or if you have only started reading books recently.
Though, I fail to understand why was this book shortlisted for Women Prize for Fiction 2019 and longlisted for the Booker Prize 2019?
